How to Design a Stunning Fall Tablescape with Local and Foraged Items

As the air turns crisp and leaves transform into the vibrant hues of gold, amber, and deep rouge; there's a magic in the air that begs for cozy gatherings with loved ones. This fall, why not bring the beauty of the season indoors with a tablescape inspired by the natural bounty surrounding us?

This year, we decided to ditch the generic store-bought decorations and embrace the spirit of local flora for our fall entertaining. The result? A truly unique and captivating table that feels both elegant and effortless.

Foraging for Inspiration:

Our first stop is always our own backyard! We are constantly amazed by how many elements we can incorporate just from a short walk around the yard or nearby wood. Crimson maple leaves, sturdy branches, and even a few fallen acorns can create a wonderful foundation for your design.

Next, we suggest visiting a local farmer's market. At these treasure troves of seasonal inspiration, you can pick up a bundle of fragrant eucalyptus, deep orange pumpkins, and a variety of gourds and fruits in interesting shapes, textures and colors.

Creating the Look:

  • Natural Table Runner: Instead of a traditional runner, layer branches and maple leaves down the center of the table, adding a touch of woodland charm.

  • Rustic Centerpiece: A vintage wooden crate, patinated metal compote or even collected wine & beer bottles will create the base for your centerpiece. You can then nestle pumpkins, gourds, or woody stems around the outside, creating a dynamic and eye-catching arrangement.

  • Festive Place Settings: Elevate your place settings by featuring a simple sprig of eucalyptus or fall leaves and a handwritten name card tied with twine.

  • Candlelight Ambiance: Placing taper candles in varying heights will add a warm glow to the table, casting flickering shadows on the natural elements. Feel free to scatter some small votive candles to add even more depth and romance.

Tips for Success:

  • Don't be afraid to get creative! There are no rules when it comes to working with natural elements. Celebrate the beauty of the season with withering of leaves, spindly branches, or fun shaped seed pods.

  • Choose a color palette and stick to it. This will help create a cohesive and visually appealing look while simplifying the design with less need for many elements.

  • Vary the heights and textures of your centerpiece. This will add visual interest and dimension.

  • Layer, layer, layer! Don't be afraid to experiment with different textures and materials to create a rich and inviting atmosphere.

This fall, we encourage you to embrace the beauty of your local environment and let it inspire your next gathering. With a little creativity and a touch of nature's magic, you can create a truly unforgettable experience for your guests.
